504 Democratic Club: 2005 New York City Democratic Primary Election Results

Hi all,

Yesterday's primary election results were largely favorable for 504 and the disabilities community.

In the Mayoral race, we didn't take a position as we were fairly evenly divided among the four candidates. We congratulate the winner, Fernando Ferrer, and seek to work with him in getting community involvement in his campaign and developing a significant disabilities agenda for his election. We congratulate Anthony Weiner, C. Virginia Fields and Gifford Miller for waging hard fought, generally clean camapigns. We particularly appreciate Weiner's withdrawal to assure a united Democratic Party going into the election.

We salute Margarita Lopez for waging a strong, hard fought campaign for Manhattan Borough President and for her focus on disability issues, particularly accessible taxis. We have always worked well with the winner of the primary, Scott Stringer, whom many of us would have supported if Margarita hadn't been in the race, and anticipate he will continue to work closely with our community. We anticipate that he will be a strong supporter of our initiatives.

Eve Rachel Markewich lost a hearbreaker for Surrogate. We are proud of her and hope that she will dust herself off and that we will have an opportunity to support her in the future.

Of course, we're pleased that Robert Morgenthau won the Manhattan DA race.

We are particularly pleased with the results of the Council races. In nearly every instance, with the exception of our support of two underdogs against Queens incumbents, our endorsed candidates won. These included incumbents Robert Jackson, Oliver Koppell, Hiram Monserrate, Tish James, Sara Gonzalez, Yvette Clarke and Lew Fidler. The overwhelming majority of our endorsed candidates in open seats won: Rosie Mendez, Daniel Garodnick, Jessica Lappin, and Inez Dickens in Manhattan and Jimmy Vacca in the Bronx.

All are strong supporters of our Council agenda, particularly accessible taxis and community car services. We anticipate two other new Council members, Melissa Mark-Viverito and Darlene Mealy will also be supportive.

Virtually all the major candidates for Council Speaker (succeeding Gifford Miller, who is term-limited) are supporters of accessible taxis: Christine Quinn, the favorite (who has pledged that resolving the issue of taxis will be a priority for her), Lew Fidler, Leroy Comrie, David Weprin and Melinda Katz will be returning. We anticipate that they can provide the strong leadership necessary to move this along.
